Endurance sports have been an integral part of my life since the year 1999. However, in high school I was always althetic. I played lacrosse, and started out on the boys' lacrosse team. The next year they started a girls' team and I was stoked. I earned 5 Varsity letters in high school and went on to play club lacrosse at Florida State University, however, I soon lost my passion for lacrosse and started looking for something different.
In 1999 I decided that I wanted something to challenge me more and turned to long distance running. I wanted to train for a marathon. I began running and quickly shed 20 pounds in the span of a month. I entered local running races and always placed first or second in my age group. At the insistence of a friend, who ran track and cross country for Florida State, I walked on the cross country team. At the same time, I began to cross train for triathlon. I did my first triathlon in early 2001 on a steel framed road bike, and placed 3rd in my age group and 11th overall. Since then triathlon became my passion and I began training and racing for triathlons exclusively. I took that passion and got my USAT Coaching certification and began to coach, starting the nation's first Varsity Triathlon team at a high school in 2004, ironically where I had gone to high school and was then teaching there.
In 2005, I decided I wanted to further my education and enrolled in a doctoral program at The University of Alabama. I became heavily involved with triathlon there, helping to start a local triathlon club and I was one of the founding members of The University of Alabama Triathlon Team. I earned my Ph. D. in 2008 and moved to Texas where I have continued to spread my love for the sport by helping to start the Sam Houston State University Triathlon Team and working with local groups to start youth and junior triathlon programs.
I feel that the sport of triathlon can offer people from all walks of life the opportunity to achieve their dreams and accomplish their goals due to the nature of the sport, which promotes looking within oneself to see the very thing that motivates all of us: Desire. This desire can then spill out and light up many lives and touch everyone who dares to let triathlon move them.
